Putting security on the housing wish list

Stone benchtops in the kitchen, his and hers sinks in the ensuite, and cameras on every corner?

Stone benchtops in the kitchen, his and hers sinks in the ensuite, and cameras on every corner? Security systems are becoming another sought after feature in homes as property crime continues to dominate news headlines, front pages and social media feeds.

As unfortunate as it is, home and car theft is becoming more and more prevalent, and even when it doesn’t actually occur, the spectre of the risk remains – driving home buyers to be more conscious of the security of their new home.

Diamond grill security screens have been the standard fitting since the 1980s (or sooner, but I’m a 90’s model so will plead ignorance), but Crimsafe and similar reinforced security screens are gaining popularity both in new builds and in retrofits to existing windows and doors. Being security conscious doesn’t mean your home has to look like a fortress though, with a number of attractive (and decorative) options combining custom cut aluminium with traditional screens to give an attractive look AND additional security. I went down this route myself on a previous home, though in that case it was about keeping an unruly toddler in rather than keeping people out – particularly when they were old enough to reach the door handle and work out that there was a playground just down the street!

On the surveillance front, camera systems have gone from being an arcane, multi-thousand dollar hard-wired investment, to an easy, potentially tool-free installation with app and internet access for as little as a hundred dollars or so, depending on what you want. The ease of wireless systems also mean that when it comes time to sell, you can either take the system with you or leave in place for the new owner (just make sure to cover the choice in your contract!).

Gone are the days that you could say such and such street is the one to avoid, or this or that suburb was golden – it all comes down to being vigilant, and above all locking doors, whether you are home or not. If selling your home while vacant, its worth being extra careful, and checking in with your neighbours to let them know if there shouldn’t be anyone at home. Though make sure to let them know who your agent is – so no-one gets a surprise!
